Mindoro Bleeding-heart

Gallicolumba platenae

FAMILY

Pigeons and Doves (Columbidae)

LAST DOCUMENTED

2006

(20 years)

REGION

Asia

IUCN STATUS

Critically Endangered

Background

This critically endangered pigeon is found only on the island of Mindoro, Philippines. It occurs in lowland forest (unlike Mindoro's other lost pigeon, the Mindoro Imperial-Pigeon) and is threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Rediscovering this species before it becomes extinct is an urgent priority.

There are five species of bleeding-heart pigeons in the world, all of which are endemic to the Philippines. Along with the Mindoro Bleeding-heart, the Sulu Bleeding-heart is also a critically endangered lost bird and was last documented in 1890.

Last Documented

The last definite documented records of Mindoro Bleeding-heart appear to be a series of photographs of a bird that was captured and released near the Sablayan Prison in December 2005.

A 2016 sound recording archived on Xeno-canto could also be this species but the identity of the recording is difficult to confirm given that there are no known recordings of Mindoro Bleeding-heart to compare it to.
