Last Documented

The last documented record of this species is a photo taken by Bruce Beehler in 1981. Prior to that, the most recent record appears to be a specimen collected in September 1960 near Peak Yamin (formerly Mount Goliath) in Papua, Indonesia. (The first version of the Lost Birds list erroneously listed a record from 1969 as the most recent record of this species.)

Taxonomy

Although this taxon was originally (2021) considered to represent a species in both of our taxonomies, Archbold's Owlet-nightjar was lumped with Mountain Owlet-nightjar (A. albertisi) in eBird's 2022 taxonomy update.
