Ogea Monarch
Mayrornis versicolorFAMILY
Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
LAST DOCUMENTED
2014
(11 years)
REGION
Oceania
IUCN STATUS
Near Threatened
Background
Found only on the tiny, remote islands of Ogea Levu and Ogea Driki, in the Lau island group of eastern Fiji, this monarch is apparently relatively common in its range but the Ogea islands are so infrequently visited by birders that it appears the last documented records were in 2014! For anyone able to make the voyage to Ogea this should be a relatively easy species to find.
Conservation Status
Ogea Monarch is considered Near Threatened due to its tiny known range. The total distribution of the species is just 28 km2, roughly half the size of Manhattan.
Last Documented
Ogea Monarchs were photographed multiple times when a birding group visited the Ogea Islands in April 2014, with images publicly available on eBird and Observation.org.
