Background

In 2024, the eBird taxonomic update divided the Island Thrush (Turdus poliocephalus) into 17 distinct species. As part of this Bismarck Island-Thrush, was recognized as a distinct species. Found in the mountains of New Ireland and a few nearby small islands, the last documented records of this species are from 1994.

As a newly recognized species, Bismarck Island-Thrush has no illustration in the Birds of the World.

Taxonomy

Bismarck Island-Thrush was recognized as a distinct species in the eBird taxonomy in 2024. In the HBW/Birdlife taxonomy it remains as a subspecies of Island Thrush.
