Background

Found in the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines, the Sulu Cuckooshrike was last documented in 2008. Recognized as a separate species from Bar-bellied Cuckooshrike in 2024, this species has no illustration in Birds of the World.

Conservation Status

Sulu Cuckooshrike is not recognized as a distinct species in the HBW/BirdLife global bird taxonomy and therefore is not evaluated on Red List of Threatened Species.

Last Documented

The last documented records of Sulu Cuckooshrike appear to be video recordings made by Desmond Allen in 2008.

Taxonomy

Sulu Cuckooshrike was previously considered a subspecies of Bar-bellied Cuckooshrike, which occurs from Thailand into Indonesia and the Philippines. The 2024 taxonomic update, Sulu Cuckooshrike was recognized as a distinct species in the eBird taxonomy. It is still considered a subspecies of Bar-bellied Cuckooshrike in the HBW/BirdLife taxonomy and on the IUCN Red List.
