Background

Found in southern Somalia and adjacent areas of northeastern Kenya, this stunning weaver was last documented in April 2014.

Last Documented

The last documented record of Red Weaver appears to be a photograph taken by John Musina in April 2014 and published as part of the "Bird Diversity Survey in the Boni-Dodori Forest System Kenya" (Musina et al., 2015). Musina's images may be the only photographs ever taken of this species.

Taxonomy

Previously considered to be a subspecies of Red-headed Weaver, Red Weaver was recognized as a distinct species in the eBird taxonomy in 2024.
