The last documented record of Red Weaver appears to be a photograph taken by John Musina in April 2014 and published as part of the "Bird Diversity Survey in the Boni-Dodori Forest System Kenya" (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/319253680_Bird_Diversity_Survey_in_the_Boni-Dodori_Forest_System_Kenya_2015">Musina et al., 2015</a>). Musina's images may be the only photographs ever taken of this species.

Previously considered to be a subspecies of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://ebird.org/species/rehwea1">Red-headed Weaver</a>, Red Weaver was recognized as a distinct species in the eBird taxonomy in 2024.
