Although two Kinglet Calyptura were seen near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in October 1996 (Pacheco and Fonseca 2001), no photos, videos, or audio recordings were obtained. Thus, the only documentation remains the bird's extensive specimen record from southeastern Brazil (>100 specimens in ~50 museums), the last of which was collected sometime between 1860 and 1864 (NRM 90127687; Silva e Silva et al. 2023).
