Cuban Kite

Chondrohierax wilsonii

FAMILY

Hawks, Eagles, and Kites (Accipitridae)

LAST DOCUMENTED

2009

(15 years)

REGION

North America

IUCN STATUS

Critically Endangered

Background

Like its mainland counterpart the Hook-billed Kite (C. uncinatus), this bird probably specializes on tree snails. However, unlike that species, the Cuban Kite sports an even larger, all-yellow bill. Although formerly more widespread in Cuba, it is now restricted to remote mountains in the eastern tip, where it has apparently only been photographed or videotaped on three occasions.

Last Documented

The last photo was in or near Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, Cuba (November 2009).
