Dulit Partridge

Rhizothera dulitensis

FAMILY

Pheasants, Grouse, and Allies (Phasianidae)

LAST DOCUMENTED

1902

(122 years)

REGION

Asia

IUCN STATUS

Vulnerable

Background

Endemic to the mountains of Borneo and known from only eight specimens collected between 1894 and 1902. Nothing is known about this species' ecology, but based on the few specimen data available, it presumably replaces the similar Long-billed Partridge (R. longirostris) of Borneo's lowlands and probably occupies mid-elevation forests (~900-1200 meters).

Last Documented

The last specimen was collected in April 1902, from what is likely to have been Murud Kecil, a small mountain on the Malaysian side of Borneo; the remaining seven specimens were collected from Mount Kinabalu and Mount Dulit (Berryman and Boakes 2023). Although all specimens stem from the Malaysian side of the central highlands, there is no reason this species should not be looked for in Indonesia.

Challenges & Concerns

Only adult males are separable in the field and its vocalizations are unknown (Berryman and Boakes 2023).
