Tadorna cristata

FAMILY

Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl (Anatidae)

LAST DOCUMENTED

1920

(104 years)

REGION

Asia

IUCN STATUS

Critically Endangered

Background

Known with certainty from coastal localities surrounding the Sea of Japan (southeast Russia, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula). Aside from a compelling sight record in 1964, four specimen records (1822–1916) form the basis for almost our entire knowledge of this bird. As such, we can only speculate about its ecology, including the whereabouts of its breeding grounds.

Last Documented

There are only six known specimens (two females and two pairs), with the last specimen collected along the Nakdong River in South Korea (December 1916; Kuroda 1917).
