Ashy-tailed Swift

Chaetura andrei

FAMILY

Swifts

LAST DOCUMENTED

2005

(20 years)

REGION

South America

IUCN STATUS

Vulnerable

Background

Found only in Venezuela, this poorly-known swift was long considered a subspecies of Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi) and is challenging to identify in the field. Between sound recordings made in July 2005 and photographs taken in 2022 there were apparently no documented records of Ashy-tailed Swift, meaning that it was technically a lost bird for 17 years.
