Background

This beautiful pitta is found only on the island of Rossel in the Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea. Following the collection of specimens of the pitta in 1916, the bird disappeared from the scientific record for 106 years before it was photographed and sound recorded by Michael Smith in July 2022.
