Last Documented

The last documented record of this species is a photo taken by Bruce Beehler in 1981. Prior to that, the most recent record appears to be specimen from the easternmost province in New Guinea in July 1969, although we note that this is outside the mapped distribution for this species. (The 1969 record was used as the most recent record in the first version of the Lost Birds list.)

Taxonomy

Although this taxon was originally (2021) considered to represent a species in both of our taxonomies, Archbold's Owlet-nightjar was lumped with Mountain Owlet-nightjar (A. albertisi) in eBird's 2022 taxonomy update.
